INSPIRATION
Sammy Davis’ cultural contributions go deep and wide. He was a singer-actor-dancer and an activist in and outside of the entertainment industry. Davis, an Afro-Cuban army veteran, was a member of the famed Rat Pack, though he was denied the opportunity to sleep in the hotels they performed in due to the color of his skin. Following a 1954 car crash in which he lost one of his eyes (as depicted in this print), Sammy Davis Jr. converted to Judaism. The near-fatal tragedy turned out to be a source of strength and wisdom as it helped him gain a deeper appreciation for life, friendships and humanity.
