INSPIRATION
As a young child, Puerto-Rican born Arturo Schomburg (1874-1938) was told by a schoolteacher that there was no significant Black history to study or speak of. Dedicated to proving otherwise, Arturo Schomburg devoted his life to collecting proof of Black intellect, culture and history. His personal archive of 10,000 cultural items of Africans and African-descendents was acquired by the New York Public Library in 1926, becoming the foundation for the Schomburg Center. Thank you, Arturo Schomburg for the ways in which you’ve allowed us to see and be seen.

This visually impactful piece is inspired by Shepard Fairey's iconic graphic interpretation of Andre the Giant and the inspiration for the Schomburg mosaic in Piñones, Puerto Rico.
