Nicole & Chacon: Latch(ed)

Excerpt from Bubble (written sometime in 2005-2006), by Nicole
”If I had a bubble I would package us up and seal us within. We'd unfold and open our eyes to see the rest of the world upside down, on its side, in motion, only occasionally standing still. We'd play, laugh and roll and tire each other out….Our total privacy would be our absolute security. We'd travel in our bubble and once we had reached safe, solitary places, we'd climb out and enjoy the freedom, but not more than we'd enjoy the comfort of climbing back into our piece of Xanadu, where it's all about you and me.”

Two kids, a building, some businesses later–it still wasn't time. Then a pandemic came and sealed us into that bubble I had imagined so long ago. And it was the right time.

So on a rainy day in February - the 27th, to be exact (we’ll save the story of our March 1st wedding for another day), we got married in our Bed Stuy home, with our sons, best friend, and mom by our side to bear witness and bless our union in a virtual ceremony conducted by dear friend Michael Carl Casiano, wrapped up with a 5-course meal prepared by Chef Mohamed Wahiba. Our wedding song was “Latch” by Disclosure and Sam Smith.

With 2020 being the year that it was, one thing was made clearer: we wouldn't want to be locked down with anyone but each other, and this family. On our wedding day, missing in the physical realm, but ever-present in spirit and in our hearts were some of our biggest cheerleaders—our most cherished gifts who bestowed countless blessings on our relationship over the past 16 years. Without a doubt, on that day we were wrapped and covered in their love, their support, their conviction, their strength, and their approval. Mom Helen Marie, Mumma, Chakaras, and Dad–thank you. To you and to our many angels in the ancestral plane, thank you for contributing to who we are as individuals, and for laying the path that brought our souls together.

To you, our family and friends who are learning about our wedding in this moment, thank you for being part of our village of caretakers, joy-bringers, and believers. Thank you for your listening ears, sturdy shoulders, and open arms. In a few months, when it's safe to gather, we'll be throwing a party to celebrate our union. It'll be nothing short of amazing, and we hope you’ll join us then (date soon TBA). Meantime, in all seriousness, if anyone can find out how to secure 9th Wonder as our DJ, please let us know.

We hope you’ll enjoy the memories from our day.

We love you! Big time.
